Eye Health Tips

Our eyes are incredibly complex (and amazing) organs that allow us to see and perceive the world around us. But our eyes can change over time, which is why it’s crucial to maintain good eye health by protecting them from UV rays, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and booking regular eye exams to detect issues early and treat and maintain your eyes for many years to come. The Apps Optical team has important eye health tips you can follow to help you stay on top of your vision’s wellbeing.

Helping People of All Ages Protect & Maintain Eye Health

Eyes are important! Regardless of age, following these tips from our team can help you protect and maintain your eye health through every stage of life.

Book Regular Eye Exams

We recommend getting a comprehensive eye exam at least once every year (which your optometrist may suggest otherwise depending on the issues you’re experiencing). This helps to detect early signs of disease or other issues that can affect your eyesight and allows you to seek appropriate treatment in a timely manner. Our team can help set up an exam for you with an optometrist in our store that will feature several components, all of which the optometrist will walk you through and explain in detail.

Protect Your Eyes From UV Rays

Wearing sunglasses is an important aspect of preventing eye damage from harmful UV rays. Prolonged exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays can lead to long-term damage such as cataracts, macular degeneration, or even skin cancer on the eyelids. Sunglasses not only help provide protection, but they also reduce glare and improve visual comfort. They can also assist with preventing wrinkling and premature aging around the eyes. Plus, they’re stylish, so you can protect your eyes and the skin around them in a fashionable manner!

Maintain a Healthy Diet

Eating a balanced diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables, especially those high in antioxidants like vitamins A, C and E, can help protect your eyes from disease. Your optometrist can recommend specific foods that are good for your eye health and recommend drinking more water - staying hydrated can prevent dry eyes and maintain overall eye health. Quitting smoking can also protect your vision by reducing your risk of developing certain eye conditions such as cataracts and macular degeneration.

Practice Good Hygiene

Proper hygiene, such as washing your hands before touching your eyes or contact lenses, can help prevent infections and irritation. Cleaning your face with gentle, clean ingredients is also important to help prevent irritation and inflammation - make sure you’re reading the ingredients lists on things like face wash, makeup wipes or makeup remover. Some common ingredients to avoid include perfume/fragrance, alcohol, parabens, sulphates, BHA, formaldehyde, phthalates and oxybenzone.

Take Breaks From Screens

Spending long periods of time staring at a computer or phone screen can cause eye strain and discomfort. An optometrist may recommend the 20-20-20 rule, which involves taking a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away every 20 minutes to reduce strain on your eyes. Taking breaks also allows you to blink more frequently, which helps to lubricate your eyes and prevent dryness.
